Latest schedule as of 13th March 2013.

Thank You!

Dear all,

Hope the monsters had fun today! I know I did.

Big thank you to Mrudula a.k.a. Avni's Mum, Soo Ah's Mum, Pauline, and of course, Jessica! I know I have the best bunch of parents around but you gals certainly made the monstrous party possible with your fondue, cakes, muffins, and even ice cream!

As the kids said, it's the best class party thus far, and I definitely agree. To all the parents who contributed in one way or the other with your snacks and raisins and drinks - big thank you too for helping to make the last day of school for Term 1 an enjoyable one for the kids and myself.

Pics will be up soon... Too bad I didn't get any pictures of the lovely ladies in class... :(

Congratulations!

Hello all,

Congratulations to Group 6 - comprising of CC, Danial, Atif, and Rasheen, with a grand total of 1035 points! They are our winners for Term 1, and will be going on an all-expense paid trip to the movies.

They've won not because of luck as many of you might think, but the drive they share to be the best - be it in competitions, handing in of assignments, or ensuring that their files are in order. These are qualities of a good student, and I'm happy to say that Group 6 is made up of them. Keep it up guys! Though you might be in different groups come Term 2, I hope you would bring this camaraderie into your new group and support your group members. Who knows... You might just win again!

Details of the trip:

Venue: I12 Katong, GV Cinema

Activity: Jack the Giant Slayer / Oz the Great and Powerful; Food

Time: After Games On! Tentative timing: 2-2.30pm until 4-5pm

Transportation provided. I'll likely be ferrying all of you home if your parents are not picking you up.

**DO GET YOUR PARENTAL CONSENT FOR THE TRIP!**

PTM Schedule

Dear all,

PTM schedule as of 11th March 2013. As you can see, due to some parents being unable to make it for their respective timeslots, we have some slots empty.

For the students who have made requests for a change in timing, do see if the available slots currently are feasible for you, such that arrangements with another parent would not be necessary.

To my lovely parents, I've mentioned it previously - and I'll say it again. You do not have to come down to meet me if it's too much trouble. We have the PTM as a channel of communication between the form teacher and the parents as stakeholders in education - but it is just ONE of many channels.

My lines of communication are open, and you are welcome to meet me any time I'm available - be it regarding your child or even a chit-chat session (not sure how receptive you are to that).

Feel free to arrange an alternate day, or even call me should you have problems meeting me on the 14th of March.

I do, however, like to put a face to a name, and would relish the opportunity to see the many hunks and babes I have as partners in education. :)

I'm so excited...

Save the picture and view it if you find it too small. Reduced it for aesthetic reasons.

11th March 2013

Notes for the day:

Filing! Get it signed or for those not done, get it done. You know what'll happen if you don't. :-) Deadline - 10 am tomorrow.

Reminder: Games On tomorrow. Futsal is the only sport down so if you've signed up for futsal, you're down for the session tomorrow.

Putting up the schedule for PTM in a few minutes. Students who still owe me the slips please submit them to me tomorrow.

Bonding through Feasting

Note that BF time for Term 1 will be this Tuesday, from 1000-1030 a.m., following which will be your recess. You're allowed to have your food in class, and Milo will be distributed to each of you.

You're supposed to be bonding with me in class, so no one is allowed to leave until I have bonded with each of you. :D

We'll be playing some games...

Class Party

Dear monsters,

Wednesday 1130-1230 will be the tentative time slot for our class party. We'll invite Mrs. Batchelor over to join us since it's during her lesson and she's never been able to join us for the previous ones we had.

Bring food! I'll be getting stuff too.

Already have parents volunteering to get feed for us. Really love you all...

Real Life Zombies

Those of you from 3 Grace might remember me sharing this creepy piece of trivia with you...

This image may look like something dreamed up for a surreal horror movie, but it's a real horror for the tarantula in question. This unfortunate arachnid is infected with Cordyceps, a parasitic fungus that replaces its host's tissue with its own.

Cordyceps fungi invades its hosts (mainly arthropods), and its mycelium eventually replaces the host's tissue. Once the arthropod is dead, cylindrical or branching growths emerge from the creature's dead body. Some species also have mind-control capabilities, convincing the host to travel to a place where the fungus will find optimal growth conditions before the host dies.

The video I showed you guys last year...

For History Buffs...

Here's a piece that would hopefully convince some of you that history is really quite fascinating. And you get to learn some proverbs. :)

Caveat: Some of these are simply assertions and not entirely true.

In the 1500s,

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water..

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, 'Dirt poor'. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat..

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen
table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be 'saved by the bell' or was considered a 'dead ringer.'

Whoever said History was boring ? ? ?
